Colleen Bak was our doula for the birth of our first child.  We knew soon after meeting her that she was the doula for us based on her experience, thoroughness and sincerity.  We wished for a natural child birth, and Colleen helped us plan and prepare for labor at a birthing center.  However, due to low amniotic fluid levels late in the pregnancy, our physician insisted on a hospital admission and an induced labor.  We were extremely upset at this intrusive and unexpected departure from our birthing plan.  Thankfully, Colleen was calming and supportive when she joined us at the hospital.  She reassured us that despite this diversion from our plan, there were still things we could control to make the birthing experience rewarding and less “medical.”  Her presence and assistance helped us get through an induced labor without using any pain medication, resulting in the birth of our amazing son, Jesse.

My husband and I recruited Colleen Bak to be our birth doula late in my first pregnancy because we were unsure if we needed one.  I'm so glad for our decision.  The birth of my daughter went smoothly and beautifully.  I wanted to have a drug-free labor and Colleen's nuturing, insightful nature made it that much easier for me.  She talked in soothing, encouraging tones during my contractions...she also knew when to be quiet, which is so important. She helped with my intense backpain using  a hotwater bottle and massage.  She's a loving person with a lot of experience.  She helped my beautiful daughter into this world and she rewarded us with her written birth story full of details that I could not have remembered on my own.
